The final approval came from The Planning Board in Tiverton. The 7,500-square-foot gaming facility is expected to open next year.

The Tiverton Planning Board voted 6-1 with two abstentions on the project, after Rhode Island voters approved a ballot referendum three years ago to expand commercial gambling in the state.

The project at William S. Canning Boulevard and Stafford Road will replace the Newport Grand slots parlor. According to the plan, a traffic roundabout is required to be built before the casino and hotel can open in July 2018.

Now under construction, it is expected to ease traffic congestion at the busy intersection of the two thoroughfares in east Tiverton, near the Fall River, Massachusetts, line.
