Russia reports 38,700 online gambling complaints

The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media known as Roskomnadzo said the number represents a substantial 235% increase compared with the same period last year.

Roskomnadzor was created in 2008 to monitor the mass and telecommunications and electronic media in the country. The regulator is is in charge of penalize any illegal distribution of information of different nature such as gambling.

The official figures showed that local authorities are trying to tackle the increase of illegal gambling sites. According to a report shared by Casino Daily News, 1,400 gambling-related domains were added to the blacklist in the span of a single week earlier this year.

In addition, the authorities approved a ban on the use of virtual private networks (VPNs).

Under current legislation, online casino and poker services are prohibited in the country. However, sports betting is considered legal and interested operators can apply for licenses from local regulators.
