Town and Country Planning Minister, Viaji Sardesai, is pushing for a new bill to allow offshore casinos anchored in River Mandovi to be shifted to land.

“I am actually pushing for moving them on land. For this the Act needs to be amended. The casinos are polluting the river. Instead, we can make the river something like the Hong Kong harbor,” said Viaji, stating that the party’s stand on casinos remain unchanged," said Sardesai.

There are five offshore casinos in India: Delta Corp Ltd, Goa Coastal Resorts and Recreation Pvt Ltd, Highstreet Cruises and Entertainment, Golden Peace Infrastructure Pvt Ltd and Delta Pleasure Cruise Company.

The cabinet had resolved not to renew offshore casino licences expiring after March 31, 2014, for operations in the current location, but in a cabinet meeting in March 2014, licenses for offshore casinos were renewed by two years to allow them time to make alternate arrangements to move out of the Mandovi river.

The government started looking for alternate sites and locations were even identified in the Aguada bay, and Zuari, Chapora and Sal rivers.
