Yogonet exclusively spoke with the boss of Wplay.co, Colombia’s first online gaming operator, who said: "This didn’t happen overnight. About a year ago, we began working extremely hard to meet all licensing requirements.”

Wplay.co, a business unit of Aquila Global Group, is 100% Colombian. The Aquila group has more than 20 years in the land-based bingo and casino industry. Land-based gaming in the South American country accounts for most of the total gaming revenue.

After winning approval from Colombia’s gaming authority, Coljuegos, Wplay.co became the first online operator to go live in the country. The site, which currently offers just sports betting, plans to add casino games in the future.

“Our goal is to become the preferred platform for land-based bingos and casinos,” Wplay.co’s General Manager explained.

Supported by Curacao-based I-Tainment, the comprehensive, user-friendly platform will prove to be a hit among Colombian players.

“This didn’t happen overnight. About a year ago, we began working extremely hard to meet all licensing requirements. In November 2016, we kicked off work with BMM Testlabs. The entire certification process was very intense,” Tamayo commented.

“The big winner here is Coljuegos. There was a grey area in the gaming industry, but now Colombia has formally issued its first online gaming license. At Wplay.co, we hope to be the biggest revenue contributors to the market.”

Coljuegos says Colombia’s online gaming industry will generate up to USD 2.6M in the first years of operation.

Tamayo thinks that the Coljuegos' estimates suggest that the regulator expects to issue from 8 to ten licenses.
