The Gibraltar-based online lottery operator Lottoland GBP 150,000 (USD 191,000) for misleading advertising.

The UKGC explained that Lottoland did not make it clear to consumers that they were betting on the outcome of a lottery draw and not actually taking part in a lottery. Lotteries, it said, are different to other gambling products as a portion of proceeds must go to good causes.

In response Lottoland CEO Nigel Birrell said, “Lottoland was happy to work cooperatively with the Gambling Commission on this important matter. Lottoland has further enhanced its procedures and controls to ensure all future marketing communications are fully compliant”.

The Gambling Commission said they expected all operators to learn lessons from this case.
