The Springfield mayor reacted to a recent court ruling allowing the construction of a tribal casino in Connecticut.

Domenic Sarno comments came after the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan agreed Wednesday that a Connecticut judge was right in dismissing MGM's lawsuit. The suit claimed the company was placed at a competitive disadvantage because a new state law would create a special registration pathway for Connecticut's two federally recognized tribes to build casinos on non-tribal land.

MGM's lawsuit contended that Connecticut created a special registration pathway for the state's two federally recognized tribes to build casinos on non-tribal land.

Sarno said he and MGM Springfield remain focused on Springfield's $950 million casino in the South End that is under construction and slated to open in September of 2018.

"MGM Resorts International is a world-renown company and while I appreciate their continued belief and investment in our Springfield, simply put, their and my focus should and will be on what we can direct and control - continuing to put a first class resort establishment in Springfield," Sarno said.

This in itself will quell any potential competition of a glorified slots parlor in a neighboring state.

The Mashantucket Pequot-Mohegan company, MMCT, a Connecticut tribal gaming company is planning a casino in East Windsor, slated to be the state's third casino site to insulate against potential gaming revenue losses to the new MGM facility.
