The company explained the new name represents the "growing domestic and international portfolio" of Mehegan Sun and also connects brand image as an entertainment destination.

"The change in the name to MGE has been made to better reflect where we are today as far as an overall entertainment company and our advancement as a major player in commercial gaming worldwide," Chief Executive Officer Mitchell Etess said in a statement.

Since opening the casino in Uncasville in 1996, Mohegan Sun has grown to include restaurants, retail stores, professinal sporting events, a spa and an 18-hole golf course, The Hartford Curant reported.

The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority also operates Mohegan Sun Pocono in Pennsylvania, the Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J., and a resort in Washington state.

In addition, Mohegan Sun has launched a development project in South Korea to include a hotel, retail business, a cosmetics and beauty site, entertainment, an indoor-outdoor amusement park and a casino with 250 tables and 1,500 slot machines.

Closer to home, Mohegan Sun worked with Connecticut rival Foxwoods Resort Casino to win state legislation this year to build a satellite casino in East Windsor visible from Interstate 91
