"The change in the name to MGE has been made to better reflect where we are today as far as an overall entertainment company and our advancement as a major player in commercial gaming worldwide," Chief Executive Officer Mitchell Etess said in a statement.
Since opening the casino in Uncasville in 1996, Mohegan Sun has grown to include restaurants, retail stores, professinal sporting events, a spa and an 18-hole golf course, The Hartford Curant reported.
The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority also operates Mohegan Sun Pocono in Pennsylvania, the Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J., and a resort in Washington state.
In addition, Mohegan Sun has launched a development project in South Korea to include a hotel, retail business, a cosmetics and beauty site, entertainment, an indoor-outdoor amusement park and a casino with 250 tables and 1,500 slot machines.
Closer to home, Mohegan Sun worked with Connecticut rival Foxwoods Resort Casino to win state legislation this year to build a satellite casino in East Windsor visible from Interstate 91
