During a panel session at Juegos Miami, the CONAJZAR head was consulted about the opening of the bidding process for sports betting licenses in the country. In an exclusive chat with Yogonet, Balbuena confirmed that the process would officially start "in the first months of the second half of 2017” and the regulator will only grant one license.

“We have been waiting to announce the opening of the international bidding process for sports betting licenses in Paraguay since 2014. At this moment -after a great effort that involved many stakeholders of the industry- we are able to ensure that we are ready to move forward, "said Balbuena.

Although the regulator couldn’t give more details, he explained that Paraguay won’t be an open market for several licensed operators; instead the authorities will only grant one license. Balbuena said the date for the opening of the bidding process is not yet confirmed, but it will be announced soon.

"We can’t give an exact date for now, as there are definitions that are still pending. However, we can assure the process will start in the first months of the second half of this year and will be oriented to grant a single license, both online and face-to-face, which will surely be of great interest to operators."
