The Law Commission has decided to start a pubic consultation process to know whether legalising betting and gambling will help in curbing illegal activities in the country.

The panel, which advises the government on complex legal issues, has invited suggestions and views of public and stakeholders regarding legalising betting and gambling.

This comes pursuant to a direction of the Supreme Court in the BCCI judgment, in which the Court had directed the Law Commission to consider legalisation of betting.

The appeal issued by Law Commission today states that since gambling is closely associated with betting, both issues have to be considered together.

"While considering the issue, the Commission discerned that gambling is also a subject which is very closely associated with betting. While considering legalization of betting, leaving aside gambling may render the whole exercise futile. Therefore, the Commission would like to study the issue of legalizing betting as well as gambling in the country,” pointed out the official statement.
