The Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee approved the project that would require fantasy sports contest operators to register with the state attorney general's office and to pay a registration fee.

The bill would require operators to pay an annual assessment equal to 6% of gross revenues from the contests. That money would go to the state General Fund and the attorney general's office would adopt rules and regulations for the games.

According to the text, players would have to be at least 19 years old and operators could not base games on college, high school or youth sports.

Fantasy sports players draft teams of individual players in baseball, football, basketball and other sports and compete against other team owners based on the cumulative statistical performances of their players.

The House passed the bill by a vote of 43-38 on April 18.

The committee adding an amendment relaxing some of the requirements for fantasy sports operators that have fewer than 200 players.
