The Gaming Oversight Committee approved legislation that allows casinos to offer patrons betting on sports games depending on future changes in federal law.

Pennsylvania's House lawmakers want to be ready to act if a widespread federal ban on legalized sports betting is lifted anytime soon.

The new bill would cover parlays, pools, straight bets and would face a House floor vote next.

The committee’s action on a unanimous vote came as both the House and Senate are considering expanded gambling for a second year in a row to generate new revenue to address Pennsylvania’s chronic fiscal problems.

The current state budget is based on an unrealized commitment by lawmakers to generate $100 million from new gambling revenue.

Bill supporters are watching a case before the U.S. Supreme Court regarding sports betting.

“I believe we must be ready to act should the federal ban be lifted,” said Rep. Robert Matzie (D-16), the bill sponsor. — (AP)

Sports betting revenue is not being considered as part of the potential state revenue mix because of the ban, said Gaming Chairman Scott Petri.
