Cherokee Nation Businesses took a step Wednesday morning toward relocating and replacing one of its casinos.

CNB’s board of directors voted unanimously Wednesday morning to approve $1.5 million for initial infrastructure and design studies for a new Cherokee Casino Tahlequah as part of the Cherokee Springs Plaza development along U.S. 62.

The preliminary studies are expected to take about six months.

The current casino, located south of Tahlequah near the tribe’s complex, has about 400 electronic machines across 20,000 square feet. Tribal officials have previously said that the current casino will be converted into a larger space for the Cherokee Nation’s language immersion school once the new casino is up and running.

Cherokee Springs Plaza currently has a handful of tenants, including a Ford dealership, a Buffalo Wild Wings and a Taco Bueno. Chuck Garrett, CNB executive vice president, said studies are wrapping up on how to widen U.S. 62 in order to accommodate the increased traffic flow along Tahlequah’s south side.

“It’s a substantial investment, but we want to work to accommodate that additional traffic,” he said.
