In a country where record-breaking new projects are an everyday affair, the new Dubai waterfront development revealed this week by the Emirate’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, dwarfs everything that went before.

It was announced that a 20 million square foot project to be named Dubai Harbour will occupy land between the start of Jumeirah Beach Residence and Palm Jumeirah. It will include a 1,400-berth marina, cruise ship port, a 3.5 million square foot shopping mall with accompanying FECs and entertainment attractions, an events arena, hotels, housing and offices.

Dubai holding company Meraas, which already operates shopping malls containing FECs, will oversee the project. It will be overlooked by a 135m glowing tower, to be named the Dubai Lighthouse, with an observation deck and gigantic screen for hi-res projections.

It is expected that the project will be built over a four-year period.
