Former Victorian Labor senator Stephen Conroy will head a new gambling industry lobby group.

The factional powerbroker — a self-confessed sportsnut who quit politics after 20 years in September — has been appointed executive director of Responsible Wagering Australia.

The new body is being backed by bookmakers CrownBet, Sportsbet, Betfair, Unibet and Bet365 — who have all grown from their online gambling presence in Australia.

It replaces the recently disbanded Australian Wagering Council which recently failed to convince the Federal Government not to ban online in-play betting.

The group is vowing to support government regulation that will reduce the level of adverse influence during live sports broadcast.

Mr Conroy, a former communications minister, once oversaw regulations relating to online gambling.

“I’m looking forward to working closely and cooperatively with the Australian government on their consumer protection agenda,” he said. “We share their objectives and we are determined to engage constructively to make it work.”

Former Liberal senator Richard Colbeck has been announced as the group’s inaugural chairman.
