BettingExpert, an international social network for sports betting, has announced it is leaving the Russian market amid the latest online clampdown of unlicensed bookmakers and casinos.

"BettingExpert is leaving the Russian market. The tournament in November is the last one. You hold on here! Wish you all the best and good mood," it said in a statement on Twitter in an apparent reference to Premier Dmitry Medvedev's controversial remarks.

In July, Russian media and communications watchdog Roskomnadzor restricted access to the website.

At the time, its coordinator in Russia, Georgy Slugin said that the website would not remove information about betting shops and bets.

Between November 14 and 20, Roskomnadzor blocked about 1,000 websites of unlicensed bookmakers and casinos, with mirror websites of Fonbet, Parismatch and Marathonbet being the most targeted. It was nearly a twofold increase compared to the previous week, when about 600 websites were blocked.

October saw nearly 2,500 websites blocked by the media watchdog.
