The primary proponent behind a move to bring casino gambling to North Jersey believes the state will lose a golden opportunity to aid the economy and the failing local horse racing industry if a public referendum is not approved on Nov. 8.

Currently, casinos in the Garden State are only allowed in Atlantic City, per the state constitution.

Jeff Gural, the owner of the Winners off-track betting parlor in Bayonne and the operator of the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, made his comments during a forum sponsored by the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce at Winners.

Gural said horse racing is doomed to eventually fail in the New Jersey and that he is not sure how much longer it can hold on

Passage of the referendum could lead to the location of a casino in the Meadowlands, something which would aid horse racing.

Gural said that residents are now faced with many options for wagering, including race tracks and casinos in surrounding states and the introduction of Internet gambling.

New Jersey continues to lose billions of dollars in gambling revenue to neighboring states, according to Gural

Those losses have a severe impact on thousands of jobs directly and indirectly related to the gaming industry.
