MPs have formed an 11-member committee to investigate Kenya's gambling industry for the sake of regulation. National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale and deputy Minority Leader Jakoyo Midiwo will lead the team.

The members are expected to table a report of their findings and recommendations in 14 days.

They are MPs Kanini Kega (Kieni), Thomas Mwadeghu (Wundanyi), Samuel Gichigi (Kipipiri), Samuel Chepkonga (Ainabkoi) and Benjamin Langat (Ainamoi). Kega will serve as vice chairman.

Others are Soipan Tuya (Narok woman representative), Dorcas Kedogo (Vihiga woman representative), Daniel Maanzo (Makueni) and Mary Keraa (Kisii woman representative).

Midiwo said in a notice on Wednesday that the industry is crucial as the number of companies is rising and people can easily gamble by phone

This comes after Kenya Film Classification Board boss Ezekiel Mutua raised concerns over increased betting and gambling in the media.

He said a law banning betting and gambling advertisements during watershed hours will come into force.

Mutua said Kenyans must work hard and not be encouraged to gamble.

He said the board was consulting the Betting Control and Licensing Board to ensure games are regulated.
