Mass market in Macau casinos overtakes VIP market

Gross revenues from casinos from the mass market represented 53.1% of the total in the first half of 2016, an increase of 10 percentage points compared to 43.1% in the same period of 2015, according to the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance.

In a statement the Office also reported that the gross revenue of the VIP market, in turn, fell 17.3 percent year on year in the first half, while the mass market contracted by just 3.6 percent.

Accumulated gross revenue from Macau’s casinos in the first half fell 11.4 percent to 107.787 billion patacas (US$13.473 billion), said the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.

Figures issued by the Bureau showed that gross revenue recorded in June is the lowest since September 2010

In June, gross revenues decreased for the 25th consecutive month to 15.881 billion patacas (US$1.985 billion) a year on year fall of 8.5 percent.

At the end of the first quarter of 2016 there were 36 casinos in Macau run by six concession holders, 20 by Sociedade Jogos de Macau, 6 by Galaxy Casino, four by Venetian Macau, four by Melco Crown Jogos (Macau), one by Wynn Resorts (Macau) and one by MGM Grand Paradise, which had 6,087 gaming tables and 14,297 slot machines.
