Melco Crown is installing new facial recognition technology at its City of Dreams and Studio City in Macau.

It’s the first time the technology created by Cognitec has been used by a Macau casino operator. In Melco’s case, its application in a casino setting is intended to thwart people who have previously been barred from entering for various reasons and alert officials to suspicious activity of all kinds.

The system will detect the faces of individuals in live time and compare the faces found to photos stored in a database. When a match is found the system alerts the security staff.

Stephen Meltz, the Cognitec managing director for the Asia-Pacific division, said the system is the first of its kind to be used in a casino setting.

Crime has been an issue in Macau. There were over 1,500 crimes related to gaming recorded in Macau last year and casinos have been taking steps to cut down on activities such as loan-sharking and illegal imprisonment inside casino venues.
