Wynn last week announced that it had selected Suffolk Construction Co. as the general contractor for the development of its USD 1.7B Wynn Resorts casino in Everett.

The Boston construction firm, which built Dania Casino and Jai Alai in Florida, expects the project will generate 4,000 jobs over the next two years.

The largest private single-phase construction project in state history, the resort will be built on 33 acres along the Mystic River. Wynn beat off competition from Suffolk Downs and Mohegan Sun to secure the Eastern Massachusetts casino license in 2014 and following a series of delays and several legal battles, expects the project to open by the end of 2018.

More than a dozen potential contractors were contacted across the country before Suffolk Construction was selected, noted a Wynn spokesperson. The largest construction company in the state, Suffolk is already known in Boston for its work on several high-profile projects including Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel Boston and the Boston Opera House.

“Building a five-star resort that meets the Wynn quality standards requires attention to detail that is unwavering,” said Robert DeSalvio, Wynn Everett President. “Suffolk Construction shares our values and is working with us full speed to meet our ground-breaking target.”

To help pave the way for the deal, Suffolk’s chief executive, John Fish, met Steve Wynn in Las Vegas after the company was awarded the state casino license. “This business is all about relationships and I had never met Steve Wynn,” said Fish. “We were hoping to be considered for a project in our own backyard. To me, it is the crown jewel of our portfolio.”

Plans for Wynn Resort casino in Everett calls for a luxury hotel with more than 600 rooms and gaming space with up to 4,500 total gaming positions. The project features a 24-storey curved glass tower, as well as a spa, retail and meeting facilities. In addition to 4,000 construction jobs, the resort is expected to create 4,000 permanent jobs once its opens.
