Online slots boost Spanish gambling

According to the Spanish national gambling regulator Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), the introduction of online slots has contributed to encouraging third quarter improvement for the internet gambling sector.

Online gambling revenues were up 36 percent y-o-y to Euro 84.2 million, the regulator said, acknowledging that the introduction of slots to 20 licensees had pushed up online casino revenues by 114 percent year-on-year to Euro 18.1 million.

Online casino GGR represented 21.5 percent of total online revenue and 32.6 percent of total online gambling turnover in the quarter.

Online sports betting continued to deliver a solid performance, with reveues up 46 percent year-on-year to Euro 49.4 million, contributing 58.7 percent of total online revenue.

Online poker continued to underperform, declining 16 percent to Euro 14.4 million, and bingo did little better, falling 12 percent to E uro 1.8 million.

The liberalization of slots may also have contributed to increased investment in Spanish online gambling, which jumped 42 percent year-on-year to Euro 18 million, with operators boosting bonus offers by just under 200 percent compared with the same period in 2014.
