The new software called “Player Awareness System” needs to have each customer to hold an account so the system can email them or send a text message warning them of their gambling problem, if they do not have a registered account the program will alert betting shop staff.
According to the Gambling Commission police were called out for problems relating to FOBTs more than 9,000 times to betting shops between January and September of this year.
But leading bookmakers rely heavily on FOBTs now with William Hill and Ladbrokes receiving more than half their revenues from FOBTs and so any way to protect their revenues and at the same time increase the protection of problem gambling to customers is a welcome move.
