Casino operator Melco International Development Ltd says it will persist with a solo bid for a license to run a casino near the Spanish city of Barcelona.

Melco International told the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that one subsidiary no longer had a partnership with a Spanish company that had been pursuing a license, but that another subsidiary would press on with an independent bid.

Macau casino operator Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd is another arm of Melco International. Lawrence Ho has said that their partner in Spain whom they were planning to build a casino resort in Barcelona has now been terminated and the company will most likely go it alone.

In August 2014, MelcoLot submitted a bid to Spanish authorities to operate a casino in an area to near Barcelona. At that time MelcoLot had set up a 50-50 joint venture with Veremonte; the joint venture had passed to the second phase of the tender process.

“Notwithstanding the cessation of its cooperation with Veremonte, MelcoLot remains interested in participating in the second phase of the tender process to obtain the casino authorization and to pursue the project and has been exploring the feasibility of cooperating with other pre-qualified bidders,” the firm said.
