A 25,000-square-foot casino planned just across the river from Lake Havasu City would have 320 gaming machines and six tables, according to documents unveiled this week by the Chemehuevi Tribal Council.

The tribe hopes to build the casino on about 1.29 acres of land, according to a public noticed placed in News-Herald. It will be located about 1,000 feet north of the existing Havasu Landing Casino.

Approval of an Environmental Impact Report by the Chemehuevi Tribal Council would allow the tribe to move forward with construction of the long-awaited resort and casino, said Tribal Planner Bill Cox.

The Chemehuevi Tribal Council will hold a public hearing at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 to address concerns with the EIR, if there are any, before approving the document.

“This gives the general public a chance to express their concerns, if any. The council will vote wheth-er or not to accept. If they accept our report and approve we can go ahead with the construction of the casino,” Cox said. “Or they can find that the report or the public comments suggest that there are issues that need to be looked into, and construction would not proceed until the issues are ad-dressed.”

Cox said that the EIR is a public document and a copy can be requested at his office located at 1980 Palo Verde Drive, Havasu Lake, Calif. Cox said that the council would address written concerns re-ceived before 5 p.m. Oct. 20, and also concerns presented at the hearing.

Cox said the council could also reject the EIR in its entirety and a new EIR would need to be written.

The EIR for the new marina, which is planned to be built along with the casino, has already been ap-proved, Cox said.

The gaming area would comprise about 10,000 square feet of the single-story casino. The casino would also have about 320 gaming machines and six game tables. The tribe also plans to construct a 48-room hotel adjacent to the casino.
