Keep the Money in Nebraska is the name of the group, and its backers include companies involved with the state’s horse racing industry. Nebraska have five licensed tracks.
According to a report from Omaha.com, the last time Nebraska voters got to weigh in on casinos was almost ten years ago. Supporters of casinos in Nebraska say that as much as US 400 million is wagered by citizens of the state each year at nearby casinos in Iowa.
Voters rejected casinos in 2006, but Keep the Money in Nebraska is seeking to get roughly 80,000 signatures in order to put the law change on the ballot again. The group is proposing a tax rate of 20 percent on gaming revenue.
Nebraska’s constitution bans most games of chance, so there would also need to be a constitutional amendment for casino gambling. Earlier this year, a lawmaker in Nebraska was trying to get the game of poker legalized individually so that various businesses could host games.
Legislative Bill 619, the poker proposal that seeks to classify it as a game of skill, hasn’t had any action since May, according to the Nebraska Legislature’s website.
