A decision paving the way for an Indian tribe-run casino in Massachusetts appears imminent.
The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs notified officials in Taunton, a city about 40 miles south of Boston, that it will issue an opinion on the Mashpee Wampanoag's application for land in trust status in 30 days. The letter was dated Aug. 21.
The agency said its proposal, when released, would go to U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell for her consideration.
The Cape Cod-based tribe is seeking federal approval to establish a tribal reservation for a proposed $500 million resort casino.
Dubbed "Project First Light," the casino would join three gambling halls approved by the state: Wynn's Everett casino, MGM's Springfield casino and the now-open Plainridge Park slots parlor and harness racing track.
