Betting on the Olympics is currently outlawed in the state due to its classification as an amateur sport, but the group is arguing that such betting activity is commonplace in many countries around the world and Nevada would benefit from an expanded market.
The group has also noted that some athletes who play for professional sports clubs in various countries, such as LeBron James in North Amercia’s NBA basketball league, cannot be classed as amateur athletes.
Jason Simbal, vice-president of risk management for CG Technology, which provides the framework for various Las Vegas sports books, told the USA Today newspaper that the current ban places the state at a disadvantage.
“The current rules forbidding Olympic gaming put Nevada at a competitive disadvantage.” Simbal said. “We have a lot of people, especially our international visitors, who come here and are surprised they can't bet on the Olympics.”
Key figures in the gambling industry and Nevada gaming officials will meet later this month to discuss ideas before a final submission is sent to state regulators for ratification.
