(Romania).- Through an emergency ordinance issued late last year, the Romanian government has moved to legalize real-money online gambling. The amended laws will ensure that the national is now fully regulated for operators and players alike.

Romania has been offering a part-regulated online gambling service since 2010.

Odette Nestor, president of Romania’s National Office for Gambling, said: “Through this ordinance, the government has managed to regulate the online gambling sector, which was regulated in 2010, but not completely.

“We now have a legal framework that allows gambling operators to get licensed in Romania and, through this licensing, we will protect minors and Romanian players.”

The law amendment comes after pressure from the European Union on member states to regulator online gambling.

Under previous law in the country, it was legal for players to access online gambling services, but there was no regulatory body to govern the market, nor was there an opportunity for operators to secure licences.

The new regulatory structure will also require slots and gambling machines to be connected to Romania’s National Office for Gambling.
