(Sri Lanka).- Faizer Mustapha, who was the President’s Counsel and a deputy minister of investment, as well as a vocal supporter of casino resorts, has switched political parties just before next week’s presidential election.

Mustapha has been a strong proponent of three mega “integrated resorts”, and had been the public face of Rajapakse’s casino policy, but now that has all disappeared and so with it the possibility of any casino resort ever being built.

It is looking less likely that James Packer and his Crown Resorts will ever see a casino resort built in Sri Lanka following the recent departure of one of the strongest supporters in government for casino resorts move to the opposition political party.

Maithripala Sirisena is challenging incumbent president Mahinda Rajapakse for the top job and he is strongly opposed to casino resorts and has even promised to tear up any deal for casino resorts and tax breaks for them in order to gain the support of the Buddhist Party and win the forthcoming election.

Sirisena also defected last month to take on Rajapakse and has since vowed to withdraw generous tax concessions granted to foreign-funded casinos. “When I was in the government I supported integrated resorts, but now that I want Mr Sirisena to be the president, I will abide by his policies (against gambling),” Mustapha told reporters
