(US).- Before work can begin on the three new casinos coming to upstate New York, environmental reviews must be completed and state police must complete background checks on casino executives.

State officials have started the final round of background checks and environmental reviews.

Developers of the three facilities say they're anxious to get to work after a state board tapped their projects last week from among 16 proposed casinos.

The winners were Montreign in Sullivan County in the Catskills, Lago in Seneca County in the Finger Lakes and Rivers Casino in Schenectady.

The developers of Rivers hope to begin work early next year.

The team behind Lago says it has already started clearing its site so construction can begin as soon as the state awards the casino licenses.
