(US).- Tropicana Field will host the first-ever Bitcoin Bowl, to be played on Boxing Day 2014. The event will feature representatives from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the American Athletic Conference, as the North Carolina State Wolfpack meet the UCF Knights. The game, which will be broadcast on the global sports network ESPN, will provide exposure for the crypto-currency to an audience of millions.

To celebrate the occasion and help promote the uptake of bitcoin, leading online sportsbook and casino Cloudbet is running a unique promotion for the event, offering a one-cent handicap betting line for the match. The special line is available from now until kick-off on December 26.

This is the first year that the annual NCAA St Petersburg bowl game will be named in honur of bitcoin, the software-based online payment system and currency that has risen to prominence over the past 18 months.

“We’re true believers in the potential of bitcoin and would love to see adoption grow around the world,” said Dennis Laudrup, Head of Marketing at Cloudbet. “We welcome any initiatives that help raise the profile of bitcoin – but with the unique properties of bitcoin making it ideal for online sports betting, to see it being tied in with a major sporting event is particularly pleasing.”

Bitcoin’s adoption within the online gaming industry has been particularly pronounced, as punters have come to recognize its suitability for this purpose. A combination of extremely low transaction costs, instant transaction times, global reach, and a high degree of privacy have contributed to significant growth within the industry. Furthermore, a proliferation of high-profile businesses accepting bitcoin – Microsoft and Time Inc. being the most recent to join the party – means successful players now have more ways than ever to spend their winnings.
