(US).- South Dakota voters have approved a proposal giving the Legislature the authority to add a new batch of games at Deadwood casinos. Proposed constitutional amendment Q would allow casinos in the historic old west town to offer roulette, keno and craps. Those casinos currently offer slot machines, poker and blackjack. It also would allow the state's tribal casinos to offer the three new games under federal law.
Supporters say the new games could help revitalize Deadwood. Casinos in that city have seen stagnant revenues in recent years, in part because of new casinos in Iowa and Colorado.
Opponents say the additional games could bolster the negative effects of gambling, such as increased crime, suicides, addictions and divorce. Lawmakers will take up the proposal at the next session in January.
