(UK).- The Rank Group has been briefing the council development committee on the prospects of opening Northern Ireland’s first ever casino in Belfast, where casino are currently illegal. The proposal would include restaurants and a cinema along with the casino specifically for Belfast, which would create over 200 jobs.

As the law still says that casinos are illegal, a change would be needed to allow Rank to build and the meeting was to affirm whether there was such an appetite for Northern Ireland to consider changing the current legislation.

Currently a site at the north foreshore of Belfast Lough has been mentioned as one possible location. In a statement, it said it wanted to determine whether “there is an appetite for a change in legislation”.

It is believed that new Legislation to update gambling laws in Northern Ireland is due to go before the assembly in 2015. Previously the Department of Social Development has ruled out allowing for the integration of casinos in the country.

“It is not something the minister (DUP assembly member Nelson McCausland) was prepared to move towards,” an official told a Stormont committee in February 2013.
