(Uruguay).- The National Casinos Workers Union (FENAJU) and the National Association of State Casinos has written a letter to the Uruguayan Economics Minister asking for legal clarification of online gambling platforms operating from within the country.

According to the letter, online ventures operate from within free economic zones in the country, despite a previous clarification that such operations are illegal. “We want to know which were the norms applied to legalize this,” reports Revelese, and said that “online gambling is illegal”. He said it was based on the Spanish experience and added that it promotes gambling addiction.

They will also ask for information “regarding the procedures followed by this Ministry, with regards to the application of the asset laundering law, in cases involving the illegal operation of games of chance through the so-called local slots,” according to the press release.

Revelese said that “the financial sources of these activities should be investigated”. He remarked that they have spoken to the authorities and there was no progress on the matter.
