(Spain).- Online and offline operator losses are the result of high taxes, say industry groups JDigital and the Spanish Casino Association. Last month’s publication of the Spanish regulator DGOJ’s annual report for 2013 has led to calls for lower taxes from the heads of JDigital, the industry association representing online operators, and the Spanish Association of Casinos.

The DGOJ report—which was published much later than expected—continues to list online poker as the most popular form of online gambling, with 40% of online gamblers playing the game—a total of 2.24 million active players. “The majority of companies in the online market make losses”

78% of those play cash games, and 22% tournaments. The high proportion of bets returned as winnings to players meant that poker contributed just 3% of total gaming revenues.
