(US).- Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a change in state law approved by the Legislature allowing racinos to close at 6 a.m instead of the previous 4 a.m. mandatory closure. Cuomo signed the legislation last week. The new regulation was expected to be adopted yesterday by the New York State Gaming Commission.

The extended hours are expected to increase revenue at a time when many of the state's racinos have been in a slump since last winter.

New York regulators this fall will license four upstate casinos, including at least one in the Albany area, the biggest expansion of legalized gambling since the Lottery was created in 1967.

Racinos house hundreds of slot machines, a form of gambling that props up their original business, harness horse racing.

The owners of the Saratoga racino do not plan on extending the hours "at this time," spokeswoman Rita Cox said. Even with the change, gamblers can't bet on video lottery terminals around the clock.
