“There is currently too much gaming capacity in the Northeast, but we made a promise to Philadelphia that one day we would expand and make SugarHouse Casino bigger and much better,” Greg Carlin, CEO of SugarHouse, said.
Carlin was probably referring to the fact that a handful of casinos in nearby Atlantic City could soon close. Despite this, places like New York and Massachusetts are in the midst of processes that will yield new commercial Las Vegas-style casinos in their respective states.
In addition, Philadelphia will soon be home to another casino, as the state and developers very slowly move through the selection process. Las Vegas legend Steve Wynn was once interested in a Philadelphia casino, but he backed out. Right now, it’s looking like a Downtown casino is the favorite.
Pennsylvania is currently the nation’s second-largest casino market behind Nevada.
“The SugarHouse expansion, expected to open next year, will more than double the size of SugarHouse, to 260,000 square feet from 108,000 square feet, not including a 600,000-square-foot, seven-story parking garage that will give poker players, in particular, quick access to the tables.”
