Sourlas has said that the government needs to work harder in cracking down on illegal gambling and the criminal gangs that run these operations, which is harming the national economy and creating gangs an avenue for laundering millions of Euros each month.
The land based casino industry has seen revenues fall from 8.7 billion euros in 2009 to 5.5 billion in 2013, reflecting a decline of about 35%. The same occurred in gross profits, which dropped from 2.5 billion euros in 2009 to 1.5 billion last year.
It is thought that there are some 60,000 to 100,000 illegal gaming machines at non-licensed gambling locations, and a conservative guess puts the turnover at between 4 and 5 billion euros. With profits estimated at 1.5 billion.
In a separate report it is also estimated that the illegal online gambling market in Greece is worth some 1.5 billion euros per year.
