(Cyprus).- Nicosia is pushing hard to win a casino resort license from the Cypriot government when it is expected to be handed out in the spring of 2015. The Mayor of Nicosia Constantinos Yiorkadjis said the capital is the only location that makes the most business sense.

The Nicosia Chamber of Commerce (EVEL) met this week to discuss how to boost tourism in the town and having a casino resort is seen as the main driver to push Nicosia as a tourist destination.

EVEL president Costas Georgallis said the capital was best placed geographically, and being located in the centre of the island, Nicosia was the heart of the business and political communities and had the population to sustain a casino all year round.

Also, Nicosia, he said, was only 20-25 minutes from Larnaca airport, “while in the event of a Cyprus solution, it would also be a stone’s throw from the ‘now illegal’ Tymbou-Ercan Airport,” he said. It was also pointed out that by having the casino resort in Nicosia would eliminate the need for Cypriots to travel to the north of Cyprus in the Turkish zone to gamble.

The government has said that there will be one casino resort and possibly two smaller casino operations in the country when the licenses are awarded in spring 2015. The Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) have indicated that tax revenues for the government from allowing casinos would generate in the region of 50 million euros annualy.
