The commission gave preliminary approval to a construction schedule that Plainridge owner Penn National Gaming said includes installing slot machines starting in April and getting a permit to occupy a new gaming facility by June 15. June 26 is the current estimated date for Plainridge to officially open.
The commission’s “favorable action is an important step toward creating over 1,500 new jobs and hundreds of millions worth of economic investment in the Commonwealth and stopping the flow of Massachusetts dollars from leaving the state,” Penn National Vice President Eric Schippers said.
The firm estimates the project will create 1,000 temporary construction jobs and 500 permanent gaming jobs at the facility off Route 1 in Plainville. The schedule calls for a parking garage at the site to be completed and ready for use by February.
Structural steel for the gaming facility will begin to go up this summer. The commission will receive monthly updates to determine if Penn National is able to keep up with its schedule.
