(US).- Genting Berhad, the investment holding and management arm of Genting Group received preliminary approval from the state Gaming Commission for a USD 4 billion Asian-themed resort on the Las Vegas Strip. Commission members found the firm to be suitable for a state license.

Construction on the first phase of the project, Resorts World Las Vegas, is scheduled to start later this year, and opening is planned for 2016. It is planned to cover an area of 87 acres at the site of the former Stardust hotel-casino.

Gaming Commission Chairman Peter Bernhard said the individuals involved in the project had exemplary backgrounds and that the source of the financing was suitable.

Christian Goode of Resorts World Las Vegas said the property will employ 10,000 people. It will have 25 to 30 restaurants, 3,000 hotel rooms, a 4,000-seat theater and a convention center.

Company officials say they might also add a theme park and have plans for three more hotels from different companies at a later stage.
Most of the employees will come from Las Vegas and the resort will deal with local merchants, Goode said.

He said the resort plans to bring new visitors to Las Vegas from Asian countries and will not cannibalize customers from other resorts. The goal is to attract people who have never visited Las Vegas, he said.
