(US).- Opponents of casino gambling at Newport Grand testified before the City Council that it’s unfair and insulting to ask voters to expand gambling in the city two years after they rejected it. An investment group has proposed buying the video slot parlor, but only if it can add table games. That would require approval by voters, who rejected a proposal to add table games in 2012.

During Wednesday night’s City Council meeting, members of Citizens Concerned About Casino Gambling told the council that casino gambling would hurt tourism and the local economy.

The council is scheduled to hear from the investors group on May 28, and then vote on whether to ask the General Assembly to put the issue on the 2014 ballot.
