(US).- The Southern Gaming Summit opening began with a conference on how to build a billion-dollar business, taught by Tilman Fertitta, sole owner of Landry's restaurants and the Golden Nugget Casino Biloxi. The Southern Gaming Summit will continue through today with a closing address by Geoff Freeman, president of the American Gaming Association.

Fertitta said he was worth a few million dollars by the time he was 26, but didn't make Forbes' list of billionaires until he took his company private. Forbes puts his net worth at US$2.3 billion, and with 500 restaurants, casinos and entertainment venues, he is one of the largest employers in the country.

The room at the Coast Convention Center was full for his 9 a.m. speech, which he replaced with an impromptu talk because he said people had said they wanted to hear how he became a success.

Some in the room said it was the most refreshing keynote address they had heard in years, while others bristled against his unflattering comments about the condition of the Isle Casino when he bought it, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's inaccurate predictions on revenue that would be generated by Internet gambling.
