Tropicana plans USD 35 million renovation

The Tropicana Casino and Resort’s plans renovation of its Atlantic City buildings will include the addition of a choreographed LED light show on its exterior. The work should be complete by the end of 2015.

“We are excited about the prospect of creating and investing in these innovative renovations,” the casino’s president, Tony Rodio, said on Monday. “The new Boardwalk façade and interactive light and sound show would extend the excitement and fun guests experience inside Tropicana AC to guests outside on the Boardwalk.”

The renovation also would add retail areas, a new two-story fitness center, and an extension of the dining room of the FIN seafood restaurant, matching the old Havana Theme of The Quarter, one of the Tropicana’s dining and shopping areas.

The project needs several approvals, including ones from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.

The light and sound show will be presented on 20-foot-high light bollards, and nine LED screens. It would run nightly at timed intervals. The Tropicana’s north and south hotel towers would be illuminated by color-changing lights. The room renovations will include a new design, lighting fixtures and re-done bathrooms.

The work also includes four new retail outlets, including one at the corner of Pacific and Morris avenues. Three of the new retailers will be located along the Boardwalk side of the casino.

The casino said the project will create construction and permanent jobs, but did not estimate the number that would be created in either category. The resort’s parent company, Tropicana Entertainment, is owned by billionaire Carl Icahn.
