Jockey Club to reopen casino
The Jockey Club’s previous casino merely opened several gambling tables and slot machines on race days; in 2004 it was moved to the Grandview Hotel. Located near a future railway transportation hub and surrounded by several ongoing construction sites in Taipa, the Jockey Club intends to “start over” and strive for further development, stated MJC vice-president Angela Leong. “The Jockey Club has experienced several decades [of decline], a lot of its equipment will be renovated,” she added.
Thomas Li predicted that MJC’s business turnover would go up when the LRT construction is completed. At present, the Club has three off-course betting centers left; Li said that closing more betting centers will put the Club in the red, but the decision depends on the government’s arrangements and social situation. In an attempt to increase the betting volume, the Club also plans to develop online betting, as well as offering preferential deals to horse owners.
