(US).- Fall River Mayor William Flanagan and Conn.-based Foxwoods have announced a plan to build a USD 750,000 million resort casino in the city. Foxwoods CEO Scott Butera says the facility will be an economic engine for the region and "a real tourist destination."

Flanagan said Tuesday the project would create between 3,000 and 5,000 jobs. In addition to a casino, the facility would include 20 restaurants, a hotel, a convention center, a spa and entertainment center for concerts and other events.

The plan needs approval from voters and the state gambling commission.

Foxwoods previously planned a casino in Milford, but voters in the town rejected it. The state's 2011 gambling law allowed for one casino to be built in the southeast region, but gave preference to a federally-recognized Massachusetts Indian tribe.
