(Japan).- The world’s third largest economy may pass its gaming legislation between April and June. Once the gaming bill is passed, casinos won’t open till at least 2020.

While the bill had support from the minority Restoration Party and The People’s Life Party, the bill lacked crossparty support from the New Komeito Party (a coalition partner), DPJ and Your Party. This lack of full coalition support could create friction for the bill’s passage in 2014.

However, there is possibly enough support from individual members of all non supporting parties to pass legislation.

Following that, the legislature expects to pass an implementation bill within a year’s time which sets forth formal guidelines. Licenses will be awarded in 2016 with the opening of the casinos by 2020.
