(US).-Provider of coin, currency and check handling solutions Cummins Allison is looking to make sustainability part of its day-to-day operations through the implementation of green projects to help boost environmental sustainability and reduce its carbon footprint.

According to the American Gaming Association, casinos are making a major effort to adopt sustainable programs – whether put in place while a gaming institution is still in the construction stages or a when a casino is updating and completing renovations that will make operations more environmentally friendly. Some locations are looking into Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications by using the most energy-efficient appliances and reducing water use, while others are installing HVAC and electrical systems that rely primarily, or solely, on renewable resources.

While some focus on energy conservation, others are putting an emphasis on limiting waste production. Some casinos may do this by making the switch from disposable utensils and glasses to reusable ones, which limits kitchen waste. Others are beginning to see the value in using an all-inclusive currency processing solution system that can process currency, tickets and checks, all on a single device. Not only do casinos have to operate and maintain less equipment, but by reducing the device’s footprint, they can make more productive use of space on the property. Check scanning capabilities also eliminates the need to create and store paper copies of every check.

Selecting environmentally responsible equipment
Additional environmental benefits can be achieved by selecting equipment manufactured with sustainability and waste prevention in mind. For example, Energy Star-rated equipment is certified to help reduce both operating costs and related forms of pollution. In addition to how a currency scanner operates, there are other factors that contribute to the sustainability aspect of equipment.

Often, products are manufactured with consideration for waste prevention and are designed for re-use and recyclability to gain maximum utilization and minimize landfill use. Selecting equipment with an upgradeable design makes it easier to add new functionalities to existing equipment as needed, thus preventing equipment from prematurely entering the waste stream.
