(New Zealand).- The New Zealand government proposed new laws that will see gambling trusts returning up to 45% of pokie proceeds to the community, an 8% increase on the current figure.

Internal Affairs Minister Chris Tremain said that the gambling reforms would make the non-casino gaming sector more transparent, save industry from compliance costs, and increase funding to the community.

"I know it's possible because many societies are already exceeding this amount," Tremain said. "The top six societies average 40.5% pay-out, with one of the top societies paying out 46%.'' He added that for every 1% that this threshold was increased, us$ 5.4 million more gambling money would be returned to the community.

A statement from the government said the reforms would also attempt to stamp out conflicts of interest in the gaming sector, and would give power to the Department of Internal Affairs to cancel gaming licences more easily.
