(US).- Casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson has again restated his opposition to online gaming in the US. In an opinion article published by Forbes, Adelson says he is “adamantly opposed to the legalisation and proliferation of online casino gaming.”

He describes the legalisation of online gaming – a hot topic now in the US – as “a societal train wreck waiting to happen”. Online gambling is currently not allowed in Macau, just online sports betting.

Adelson argues his opposition doesn’t come from fear of what the legalisation of online gaming would mean to his US land-based casinos.

“With our popular brands – like the Venetian – we would be very effective competitors in this market place.”

However, Adelson says the hit on the overall US land-based gaming industry could “be substantial”, with up to 400,000 direct and indirect gaming industry jobs lost.

Adelson adds online gaming would have high social costs, namely higher rates of problem gambling.
